Current Program and Grant Awards

Representative Jason Ortitay has nominated Burgettstown Area School District to receive free of charge a visit by the “Mobile Oilfield Learning Unit.” The MOLU is a $1 million traveling educational exhibit about energy concepts geared for 5th thru 8th grade students developed by the Oilfield Energy Center and sponsored by Cabot Oil & Gas, Schlumberger, Southwestern, Shell, and Williams Companies. The MOLU features six self-contained stations with curriculum-based, hands-on activities about energy and the technologies and sciences involved with the oil and natural gas industry.

Washington Communities Foundation has awarded the District $6,500 for elementary science education, specifically virtual reality equipment.  That grant is funded by the District’s bank, Washington Financial.

We have been awarded a $35,000 “PA Smart Grant” from the Pennsylvania Department of Education.  These grants represent the next phase of Governor Wolf’s PAsmart initiative – an innovative approach to expanding access to high-quality computer science and STEM education across the commonwealth.  We intend to train a team of educators in Computer Science Fundamentals (Code.org) and equip them with the knowledge and skills to implement programming that is aligned to CSTA Standards.  We would then add Computer Science courses and/or units in grades 3-7 and begin to transition from pockets of innovation to an articulated scope and sequence of Computer Science curriculum.

Representative Jason Ortitay, PA Senator Camera Bartolotta and Governor Tom Wolf awarded Burgettstown a $100,000 Job Training and Education Programs Grant, which we are using to complete various capital projects.

Range Resources has included Burgettstown in their Range’s Educational Partnership Program. The $5,000 grant is awarded for classroom projects designed to increase student awareness and knowledge in areas related to Range Resources’ core business such as natural gas, crude oil and liquids production and operations, tangential areas such as the environment and the economy, internal operations such as governance, finance, emerging and completion technologies and acquisitions, or other related topics. Students and school administration will be invited to Range Resources’ Regional Headquarters during the spring semester to present their projects to Range employees.

Burgettstown, in partnership with Ft. Cherry and Avella have been awarded a Distance Learning and Telemedicine grant.  This large award is designed to equip each district as well as Cornerstone Care with the training and technology to offer distance learning programs.
