Right to Know
Pennsylvania's Right to Know Law - Act 3 of 2008
The Right to Know Law is Pennsylvania's open records law. It requires government agencies in PA to provide access to and copies of public records to the public. School districts are considered local agencies of the Commonwealth and are thus subject to Act 3 of 2008. The Law contains 30 categories of records that are exempt from the disclosure under the Law, including records that, if disclosed, would threaten homeland security or a person's personal security, criminal investigative records, medical records, and certain personnel records. Educational records that are not public records include unpublished lecture notes, unpublished manuscripts, research materials, academic transcripts, and exams and scoring keys.
In the Burgettstown Area School District, the Open Records Officer is the superintendent and/or her designee. A requester of information may make a request in person, by mail, facsimile or email. Requests must be made to the Open Records Officer and must be sufficiently specific and must include the name and address to which the District should direct its responses. A requester is not required to give the reason for the request nor can the District deny a request on this basis.
